I read with interest the article “A wake-up call to the Middle East” (March 21) by Abdulateef Al-Mulhim. The writer is hundred percent correct. Instead of wasting time on discussing the report published in a foreign magazine and mourning the US volte-face on the Middle East and criticizing Obama for ditching US’ Gulf partners, the Arab intelligentsia should come up with constructive suggestions for their leaders to move forward.
It should be seen as a normal thing. The Arab world should see this as a blessing in disguise. It is time for the Arab countries to devise a long-term strategy to expand their outreach to other global powers and to protect their interests in the world. This should not be seen as animosity toward the US. As a matter of fact, policies based on hatred tend to produce negative results in the long run. Washington has the right to protect its interests in whatever way it like. Now the Arab world has no moral obligation to keep hooked to the US. It can make decisions independent of Washington.
As the writer has correctly said that it is a reality and we should accept the fact and move on. It is international politics and we have to adopt a pragmatic approach. Adversaries don’t remain enemies forever and friends don’t remain friends forever.
