MADINAH: Harassment on the Internet among the country’s young people aged 13 to 26 has risen by 70 percent, fueled by the spread of pornography, poor monitoring by parents, and lack of proper upbringing, according to a recent study.
Mohammad Azib, a psychologist and family consultant who conducted the study, said that the responses of the young people showed that sexual and other forms of harassment online has become widespread, particularly through social media platforms such as Snapchat.
He said young people often use fake names to harass others online. The main reasons for this behavior include lack of communication between young people and their parents, which results in emotional immaturity. They use the Internet to release their pent-up feelings, he said.
Lawyer Sameh Touban said that many people are not aware that harassing or abusing others online is considered a crime under Saudi cyber laws, which were passed more than eight years ago. Penalties include jail of up to 12 months and a fine of up to SR500,000, he said.
