No to short cuts

This is with reference to the report “Illegal fitness drugs are being sold through social media” (March 21). It is becoming a global problem. People easily fall prey to the lies spread through social media. Governments across the world need to take special steps to counter the trend of using so-called wonder drugs or quick fixes.

People need to understand that there is no short cut when it comes to staying healthy. Those who claim to have magic pills and compounds for a trimmed waistline only play with people’s psyche.

Every human being is unique and our bodies respond to different things in a different manner. The one-size-fits-all approach does not work in this case. In order to stay healthy, one needs to eat healthy and do physical workout regularly. Change does not occur overnight. Our bodies take time to transform. The quick-fix approach renders a person internally weak and vulnerable to contract different diseases.

In addition to this the drugs or medicines offered online usually contain harmful chemicals that badly affect human body. The authorities should immediately ban sale of such products. A mechanism should be devised to control the sale of health products. No such product should be allowed in the market (online or otherwise) before proper certification and testing. It is not a new idea, as such a mechanism is already in place worldwide but with the emergence of a new channel of marketing i.e. the social media we need a new approach to tackle this issue.

Major social media platforms should also play their due roles to curb the sale of such products through their channels. We need concerted efforts to deal with this issue and it will take time to completely stop this practice.
