JEDDAH: The Interior Ministry has announced that there have been fewer reports of Saudis operating as suicide bombers in war zones abroad, which it attributed to an increased awareness and understanding among young people about this issue.
Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, the ministry’s spokesman, was quoted as saying by a local publication that other factors include the death of several of these citizens, the return of others to the Kingdom, and fewer leaving the country because of the government's awareness and other programs.
He said measures taken by the government include preventing those suspected of wanting to fight abroad from leaving, tighter border controls, and heavier penalties for those seeking to leave.
Mohammed Al-Hadlaa, a security and anti-terrorism researcher, confirmed there had been noticeable decline in the number of Saudis participating in conflicts abroad, which he said was proof of the effectiveness of the government's measures.
He said deterrent measures include the recent punishment of 47 terrorists and all those involved in traveling abroad to foreign areas to support terror organizations. He said many extremist organizations have inflated the number of Saudi members to gain media attention.
