RIYADH: An attempt to smuggle a large quantity of hashish across the border was foiled by Saudi Customs at Al-Wadeea land port, which connects Yemen with the Kingdom.
“Intercepting three attempts to smuggle a large quantity of hashish, Customs officers posted at Al-Wadeea seized the banned product amounting to 28 kilograms,” said Ziad Al-Aradi, acting director general of the Customs Department at the land port. He revealed that the illegal hashish was hidden inside three trucks attempting to cross the border. He added that officials were searching one of three trucks at the border point, suspecting the shipment contained illegal items, when one of the officials found the hidden contraband in the truck, which led to the discovery of the illegal substance in the other two trucks.
Customs operations across the Kingdom have been bolstered by the addition of the latest equipment, hi-tech X-ray machines and other electronic gadgets, to thwart any such attempts.
The zero-tolerance policy against smuggling of any contraband had paid off as customs officials have successfully thwarted recent smuggling attempts by criminal gangs or individuals.
An attempt to smuggle a large quantity of pork, which is banned not only in the Kingdom but other Islamic countries as well, across land was foiled by Customs on Monday when officers seized 54kg of pork hidden under ice inside the refrigerated compartment of a truck entering the Kingdom at Al-Batha Customs on the eastern border with the United Arab Emirates.
Moreover, Custom officials last month foiled attempts to smuggle alcohol when officers on duty seized 20,376 bottles of assorted liquor about to be smuggled into the Kingdom.
