Twitterati jubilant over UAE move to promote tolerance at govt level

DUBAI: UAE Prime Minister and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum’s decision to have ministers of happiness and tolerance as part of a major government shake-up created a buzz on social media on Tuesday.
The decision was described as an “out-of-the-box” solution to many ills that afflict a modern society where cutthroat competition and tough work culture have spawned a generation of stressed young people.
Addressing Sheikh Mohammed, Twitter user Eenas El-Sheikh wrote: “Thank you for all your efforts. All these are great steps. I am happy and proud of you.”
@Salig08 tweeted: “West and East should learn from the UAE. For all governments, the priority should be the welfare of their citizens.”
Titus E.D. described the move as a great concept. “Let the UAE lead the world in having a world of equals.”
Sheikh Mohammed said several ministries would also be merged and unveiled plans to outsource most government services.
“Governments must be flexible. We don’t need more ministries, but more ministers capable of dealing with change,” he said.
“We want a young and flexible government that will fulfill our youth’s aspirations and achieve our people’s ambitions.”
The minister of state for tolerance would promote the virtue “as a fundamental value in UAE society,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted.
The prime minister also announced the creation of a UAE Youth National Council.
The “elite group of young men and women” would advise the government on youth issues and be led by a female minister of state for youth no older than 22, he said, adding: “The energy of youth will fuel our government in future.”
