I read with interest the article “Colonization of Lebanon” (Feb. 23) by Abdulrahman Al-Rashed. Nobody has the right to criticize Saudi Arabia’s decision to halt military aid to Lebanon. It is a very logical decision. Why should Saudi Arabia be expected to help prop up its enemies? We all know that Iranian proxy Hezbollah is the de-facto ruler of Lebanon and we all know its ugly sectarian role in the region. The Lebanese government is hostage to the whims and wishes of this Iranian-backed militia, which due to its stupid sectarian policies has scuttled the growth of Lebanon.
Saudi Arabia is famous for its generosity and its positive role in humanitarian projects around the globe but the case of Lebanon is different. Hezbollah, at the behest of Iran, is actively involved in Syria. As a matter of fact, Iran and its proxies have changed the very nature of the ongoing Syrian crisis – from a popular revolt against a despot to a sectarian war.
It does not take a person to be an intellectual to understand that the Saudi aid was ending up in Syria and ironically against Saudi interests. In addition to that the hostile stance of the Lebanese government and its betrayal of Saudi Arabia at various key forums proved to be the last nail in the coffin.
