Fingerprint rule hits sales of used mobile phones

JEDDAH: The new regulation requiring all telecommunication subscribers to register their fingerprints has brought down the demand and prices for secondhand mobile phones in the Kingdom, according to industry sources.
“There are many used SIM cards in the black market because several expatriates leaving Saudi Arabia on final exit sell them off along with the handsets,” Mohammed Al-Hikmi, the manager of a mobile shop in Jeddah, was quoted as saying by local media on Saturday.
The resultant glut in the market has brought down the prices of secondhand mobile phones, he said.
“The chips in mobile phones have started accumulating. This has sparked off customer fears about their privacy in terms of purchases in the black market,” one seller was quoted as saying.
