Food for thought

I read with interest the article “Saudization: A boon or bane?” (Feb. 20) by Talal Alharbi. It is heartening to note that there are some Saudi intellectuals who view this issue objectively and without allowing nationalistic zeal taint their opinions. The writer echoes the views of many professional expatriates who have been living in the Kingdom for decades. Unfortunately, people usually don’t take our concerns seriously. I hope that the authorities will heed the views of this writer who has raised valid points about Saudization. At a time, when the Kingdom is making efforts for the diversification of its economy, the Saudization drive should be halted. Instead of stressing on Saudization of the labor market, steps should be taken to expand the industrial base by inviting foreign direct investments to the Kingdom. This will create enough jobs for Saudis and expatriates. I do agree with the writer that under the current labor policies and the ongoing Saudization campaign, investors will think twice before exploring the Saudi market. Investors generally look for markets with few restrictions and an environment conducive to growth.

We cannot deny the fact that Saudization has scuttled the growth of the Kingdom’s construction sector. The authorities should revisit their policies in the larger interest of the country.
