Luckiest ‘loser’ over the moon

RIYADH: The world’s fattest man from Jazan has shed 320 kg in almost three years and a video online showed him taking his first steps with the help of a Zimmer frame, thanks to the role of the Ministry of Health in the weight-loss program.
Khaled Mohsen Al-Shaeri, aged 24, once held the Guinness Book of World Records for being the heaviest man on earth as he weighed 610 kg. Losing more than 300 kg in just three years seems to be another record.
Al-Shaeri, who had been confined to his bed in his Jazan home for several years, was transferred with great difficulty to a hospital in Riyadh.
Al-Shaeri underwent a series of programs in 2013 through a directive from the late King Abdullah. “The training and nutrition programs were coordinated and undertaken by a team of 30 medical experts,” the ministry said.
As an initial step, Al-Shaeri had to be transferred from his home in Jazan to a hospital in Riyadh through the help of a crane.
To ensure his safety during the transfer, the ministry ordered a special bed from the US, a six-meter-long crane and four smaller ones which were manual, 10 tires and back pillows.
“The transfer was an arduous task. It demanded great effort and labor from the 30 medical staff who had been assigned to undertake the programs,” the ministry said.
According to statistics of the United Nations, Saudi Arabia occupies the second place to have the largest proportion of people with obesity in the Middle East.
“It’s up by 35.2 percent, after Kuwait, where the ratio is up to 42.8 percent,” the UN said.
