JEDDAH: Military items including uniforms, fabrics, belts and hats accounted for 19 percent of customs seizures during 2013 and 2014, with about 8,620 pieces seized in 98 operations at various border crossings.
The spokesman for Saudi Customs, Issa Al-Issa, told Al-Watan newspaper that the department seized military items, weapons and ammunition during the last two years at border checkpoints. "The seized items included military uniforms, white weapons, explosives, electric stun guns, weapon parts, shotguns grenades and more", said the spokesman.
Well-informed sources told the paper that some of the seized items included night vision binoculars which some persons bring into the Kingdom for trading and selling, in violation of the regulations. In addition, the source said that some foreign workers bring military fabrics with them with the intention of selling them inside the Kingdom, but all such items are confiscated.
Mohammad Al-Shahri, chairman of the Textile and Clothing Committee at Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the Kingdom imports military uniforms from South Korea, China and France worth SR500 million.
He noted that the Ministry of Interior is the body of jurisdiction to grant permits and authorization for workshops which make military uniforms.
