An attempt of illegal migration by 174
persons from 10 different nationalities has been foiled by Egyptian
security forces Saturday in the northern city of Marsa Matrouh near the
Mediterranean Sea, announced the Ministry of Interior office. The
alleged illegal emigration attempt was foiled by a joint operation
between police and navy forces, the statement added.
The migrants include 23 Egyptians, 54 Sudanese, 29 Syrians, 35 Comorians, 18 Somalis, 6 Ethiopians, 5 Eritreans, two Chadians, one Djiboutian, and one from Kenya, the statement continued. According to the initial investigation, the migrants docked on a boat from the coastal city of Gamasa in Dakahlia governorate, 126 km north of Cairo, and would have been heading to Italy. The boat began to take on water, and the crew docked the vessel in Marsa Matrouh, around 500 km far from Cairo. The boat crew fled before police arrived.
One of Sudanese immigrants, called Ahmed M. (31), suffered a fracture in his right leg when he jumped from the boat. All migrants are still under arrested for further investigations, the statement read. The Cairo Airport deported 33 persons Friday to their home countries after they had been arrested attempting to migrate to Libya and Italy. On Sept. 6, Egyptian navy forces have foiled an alleged illegal migration attempt by 228 migrants from various nationalities near Alexandria, according to military spokesperson Mohamed Samir.
