Sterilization facilities in more hospitals

JEDDAH: The Ministry of Health (MoH) has intensified its efforts to set up more sterilization departments in the Kingdom’s hospitals under its national program for equipment sterilization which was flagged off five years ago.
According to an official from the ministry, so far such facilities have been set up in 90 hospitals throughout the Kingdom. These departments will be equipped with state-of-the art facilities.
Joint Commission International (JCI), which is responsible for accreditation of hospitals, has recommended that a central sterilization department be located at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Taif. It will remain a referral body in the Kingdom due to its high-processing facilities which match international standards.
The sterilization department is to implement policies and procedures of the central sterilization department which follow international specifications and standards in line with the needs of the Ministry of Health.
It also will also identify the responsibilities, duties, job and qualifications for those working in the field of central sterilization, and create and update technical specifications for sterilization devices, supplies and supporting devices for sterilization.
Other activities will include organizing and implementing training programs on central sterilization departments and review reports of central sterilization units of hospitals in coordination with officials of central sterilization departments in health regions and hospitals.
