Kingdom refutes Canadian media reports on arms deal

OTTAWA: The Saudi Embassy in Canada has responded to the spread of misleading information regarding a military deal signed between the Kingdom and Canadian companies.
Recent Canadian publications spoke of a lack of impartiality of the Kingdom's judiciary and its lack of independence in the country, information that some Canadian media groups exploited in order to stir up negative public opinion for political purposes.
In a report published in a local publication, the embassy said in its statement: “The Embassy of Saudi Arabia notices the huge and sudden circulation of misleading information about the Kingdom which has been exploited by Canadian media and is aimed at stirring up the public opinion for political purposes. A number of Canadian media outlets contacted the Kingdom’s ambassador in Ottawa for clarifications on these issues and the embassy here wants to explain to the public that the government of Saudi Arabia signed a deal with the Canadian Trade Commission Service and the Canadian General Dynamics to provide the Kingdom with military equipment manufactured in Canada and military training.
"The embassy welcomed this partnership which reflects the commitment of Saudi Arabia to the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries.”
The embassy added that although other offers were available for Saudi Arabia from two other factories, the deal was closed and sealed with General Dynamics Land Systems, in order to support the strong will of the two countries to increase the commercial exchange between the two sides, and to bolster the investment opportunities of the Saudi's and Canadians.
Responding to Canadian media remarks on the Kingdom's judiciary, the embassy statement said: “The Saudi judiciary is characterized by independence, justice, transparency and insures equality and fairness for all citizens and foreigners on its soil.
It will not accept, under any circumstances, any interference in its judiciary and internal affairs from other places. And as the Kingdom gives much respect to the judiciary systems in other countries, it expects that other countries also respect its own judiciary system.”
