BIPP move gives illegally detained expats hope

RIYADH: The Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution (BIPP), through its Twitter account, has called on citizens and residents to inform it of any illegally detained person.
“Whoever has information on any person imprisoned or detained illegally should report the issue to the BIPP,” said the bureau.
The move is based on Article 40 of the Criminal Procedure Law. The bureau provides through its application and website the possibility for a prisoner to submit a complaint online if he is illegally behind bars.
The move was welcomed by both citizens and expatriates as it will help those, especially expats, who have been detained on petty grounds based on allegations by their sponsors.
Arab News has reported some of the bad experiences of detainees who have suffered on account of false allegations by their sponsors.
The organization said that its vision, mission and values are based on promoting justice and protecting the interests of the community, especially when the charges against the victims are unfounded.
It also seeks the protection of rights and freedom by defending the interest of the oppressed in accordance with the provisions of law and the rules in force. It will also work to promote such an objective in cooperation with authorities dealing with justice and security.
A source said the BIPP had several terms of reference, including the investigation of crimes, raising the case in conformity with the regulations, prosecuting before the judicial authorities, and overseeing the implementation, control and inspection of prisons.
The role of inspection is to apply penal provisions, listen to prisoners’ and detainees’ complaints and to verify the legality of their imprisonment or detention.
