Anti-corruption drive

This is with reference to the report “Gulf states mull joint anti-corruption drive” (Feb. 15). It is very important for the Gulf countries to root out corruption to boost development process. Such anti-graft measures have become all the more important in the wake of the slump in oil prices. In the past few decades, reasonable oil prices had offset the impact of corruption but now the situation is changing and needs a new approach to fight graft.
Computerization of official procedures considerably reducing human involvement is one sure step to combat corruption. In addition to this it is the responsibility of the GCC citizens to help their respective governments effectively fight corruption by adhering to rules and regulations. The change that comes from within is durable but the one imposed on a people does not last long. The GCC governments have done so much for their citizens. It is time for the masses to serve their countries by saying no to corruption. Governments, anywhere around the world, cannot achieve anything without popular support. The GCC people should willingly extend support to their governments in their fight against corruption.
We should understand that corruption directly affects development of a nation.
