KSA treats 2,438 Syrian patients in a week at Zaatari camp in Jordan

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia provided medical services to 2,438 Syrian refugees within a week at specialized clinics in the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan.

According to Hamid Mufalana, medical director of the Specialized Clinics Arabia, this was the 159th week of service in these clinics at the refugee camp.
The Kingdom has set up 13 specialized clinics, a psychiatric unit, laborator, X-ray department and a pharmacy. The clinics have so far treated more than 500,000 patients. It has also provided 15 ambulances equipped with medical equipment to Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon.
The pharmacies, laboratory, radiology and other relevant departments are kept open 24 hours for emergencies.
“The medical team has worked during the past week to raise the level of medical readiness in preparation for the bad weather conditions and also providing treatment and medical care for the freezing weather,” he said.
Besides treating patients with communicable and non-communicable diseases at these clinics, Mufalana said the doctors have handled a number of psychiatric patients who were affected by the conditions that drove them to become refugees.
Badr bin Abdul Rahman Al-Samhan regional director of the Saudi National Campaign, said that under the guidance of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, the campaign wants to create an opportunity for the refugees to live in dignity.
The Kingdom has spent about SR850 million over the past five years to help Syrian refugees with food, education, accommodation and health services in Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon.
This includes assistance in Jordan’s Zaatari refugee camp to 2.1 million people living inside and outside the facility, almost one million in Turkey, and more than 1.5 million in Lebanon.
In the Zaatari camp, the Kingdom provided 3,500 caravans, with another 1,000 being built. It also rented 5,800 apartments to widows and the disabled in Jordan and Lebanon for six to 12 months.
The Saudi government has provided thousands of fire-resistant tents to the refugees in Jordan and Turkey and set up 14 furnished mosques in Zaatari. It also distributed 400 food baskets in Syria and neighboring countries with basic foodstuff, in addition to 1.2 million iftar meals.
The campaign’s office in Lebanon and Jordan supported health centers to treat Syrian refugees at a cost of over $250,000 and took on the task of carrying out caesarian and normal deliveries on around 1,300 Syrian mothers, including providing clothing for newborns. Reconstructive surgeries were also performed on hundreds of refugees.
In winter, it provided more than 6,500 heaters to refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey, with kerosene at a cost of SR9 million, besides 7.5 million pieces of winter clothing.
The campaign provided 6,000 scholarships in Lebanon and established the Saudi center for training and education in Zaatari to impart training in dressmaking, drawing, computers and cooking.
The UNHCR is responsible for the refugees and the camp is managed by the Jordanian Hashemite Charity Organization. A number of other local and international non-governmental organizations are also helping.
