Kerry lauds KSA fight against terror

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed gratitude to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman for the efforts the Kingdom has exerted in assisting coalition forces against Daesh.
He also lauded the Saudi announcement that the country is ready to take part in any land operations that might be agreed upon against Daesh in Syria.
Speaking to reporters following talks with Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir held at the headquarters of the State Department in Washington, Kerry said: “Let me thank King Salman and Saudi Arabia for the strenuous efforts they have made in assisting coalition forces against Daesh and their being prepared to include their troops as part of the coalition. We also appreciate the the steps taken by Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries which are very important for the security of the region.”
Kerry said the US hoped to make progress in Syria. “The US is working to get international support to solve the crisis and proceed with delivering humanitarian assistance and achieving a comprehensive cease-fire according to Security Council Resolution No. 2254.”
“We hope when we meet in Munich in the coming days, we will be in a position to enable us to move forward in this regard.”
He said his talks with Al-Jubeir also dealt with the possibility of ending the current conflict in Yemen. The two men have also discussed the peace process in the Middle East and ways of meeting the needs of Palestinians.
On his part, Al-Jubeir said this visit was part and parcel of a continual consultation and coordination of positions as regards the protection of the Kingdom’s interests in the region and the world at large.
“We are playing an important role in the stability, peace and security of the region and the solution of its problems,” he said.
“We are determined to work with our allies in the United States and others to reach that end, be it in the anti-terror war or achieving stability in the Middle East or trying to start a political progress in Syria or bringing about peace between the Israelis and Palestinians as well as restoring stability in Yemen,” said Al-Jubeir.
