RIYADH: The Saudi Green Building Forum (SBGF) believe that about fifty percent of the ongoing eco-friendly green building projects across the Kingdom are facing delays for not fulfilling criteria.
Faisal Alfadl, secretary-general of the forum, on Saturday said: “The work is on at about 400 projects for green buildings across the Kingdom and 50 percent of them are delayed because of the lack of clarity, application of the green building concept to the owner, the consultant and the contractor.”
He said that Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman is very keen toward eco-friendly and sustainable development which is evident from the Kingdom’s policy on the issue of climate change as well as its position taken at the recently concluded climate change conference in Paris.
Moreover, it is as a central issue to serve the Saudi economy by promoting clean and renewable energy, and opening doors for generations to come and invest in this sector.
Therefore, the SGBF aim is to boost the culture of green building by fostering concepts of sustainability, human health and natural environment, said Alfadl while adding that there are some key strategies in green building adoption, which include holding an annual conference to discuss this issue and continuing education beyond the university to develop indigenous capacity building.
“To meet the target, we have trained, so far, more than 1,500 Saudi engineers while other interested professionals were extended short-term training and were given certificates, which include more than 300 professional members,” he added.
The training was provided with the support from Aramco, Saudi Arabia Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and the Saudi Council of Engineers.
Furthermore, there are strategies to enhance execution of green building projects which are friendly to humans and the environment.
He noted that the reason for the faltering of green building project is the lack of clarity in aspects on the application of guidelines to the owner, the consultant and the contractor, concerns on which the forum is working to address by helping the owner and the contractor in obtaining certificates after ensuring that their facilities are really friendly to human beings as well as to the environment, and would help reduce electricity and energy consumption toward building an eco-friendly environment.
The green buildings initiative in the Kingdom was taken by late King Abdullah in 2010 and the King Abdullah University for Science and Technology in Jeddah was the first green building constructed in the Kingdom.
