‘Drug use high among public transport drivers’

MAKKAH: The traffic department here has recommended annual drug tests for drivers with public permits because of widespread abuse of narcotics among drivers, and many accidents on the city’s roads.
This is according to Col. Fawzi Al-Ansari, spokesman of the department, who said this was the recommendation of a committee set up with representatives from various government agencies that had studied accidents involving school vehicles, taxis and buses.
Al-Ansari said this has only been a recommendation and no decision has yet been taken for implementation. He said drivers of public transport in the Kingdom need to have valid licenses and undergo medical tests before being able to work.
If the decision is implemented, then those undergoing driving tests or license renewals would have to take these drug tests. The aim is make the city’s roads safe for everyone, he said.
