Syria cease-fire

This is with reference to the report “Syria cease-fire ‘must apply checks on Iranian militias”” (Feb. 23). It is a reasonable demand. Without forcing Iran and its militias to halt their operations in Syria, chances of an effective cease-fire are thin. The Syrian crisis appears to be aggravating with the passage of time. The main problem is that the two global superpowers, the United States and Russia, are not on the same page. The former does not see any future role for Assad in Syria and the latter is insisting on propping up Assad’s regime. That is the main problem that is causing delay in finding a just solution to the crisis.
Russian stance is beyond comprehension. Analysts believe that Moscow wants to secure its strategic interests in Syria. It can reach a similar deal with the Gulf Arab countries. The situation is indeed very confusing.
