JEDDAH: The Civil Defense has fined three major Jeddah shopping malls SR50,000 each for safety violations and given them 30 days to rectify problem areas.
According to a source quoted by a local publication on Monday, the fines and deadline were imposed after the owners refused to improve safety measures, including opening up emergency exits, fixing fire-fighting systems and replacing old electricity generators.
The source said that the Civil Defense provisionally suspended the trading licenses of the malls after conducting safety inspections over the past two months. A committee was formed to oversee the process, which includes officials from the Makkah governorate. The malls would be closed permanently if nothing is done.
The source said that the committee will monitor the malls closely during the grace period to ensure compliance. The owners can ask for an extension of the grace period if they require more time to implement the changes.
