Saudi-China relations

This is with reference to the report “KSA, China to strengthen strategic ties” (Jan. 18). China is undoubtedly the next superpower of the world. As a matter of fact, it has already attained the status but Beijing does not believe in maintaining a threatening posture due to which people are not realizing the true power of this erstwhile sleeping giant. The reports we read about South China Sea are inherently lopsided and biased against China, so it is better not to trust such analyses originating from the West.
The West-Iran détente also indicates that the US and its western allies are in a panic mode due to the growing strength of China. That is why the US has conveniently turned a blind eye to Iran’s dirty politics in the region.
Saudi Arabia is moving in the right direction and the Kingdom should take its strategic alliance with China to a new level. The Kingdom has already made it clear that it no longer wants to rely on outside forces to resolve regional issues. Its action to contain the unrest in Yemen is part of the new Saudi policy under Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman.
Saudi Arabia is taking measures to diversify its sources of income. In order to achieve this goal, the Kingdom needs to set up industries and China could prove to be very useful in this regard. Saudi Arabia is blessed with huge mineral resources and China is a huge market in need for all kinds of minerals and raw materials.
In addition to that Chinese businessmen should be provided with incentives to make investments in the Kingdom, which would boost economic activities in the country and help create jobs for the people. — Hashim Javed, Jeddah
