Investing in peace

I read with interest the article “Investing in peace” (Jan. 19) by Kathy Kelly. It is very sad that the world powers appear to be more interested in making huge investments in the arms industry. Had they invested only 50 percent of those funds to alleviate poverty and hunger, the situation of the world would have been very different.
It is not just Afghanistan; many other countries are facing the same problem. The world leaders should try to understand the factors behind the rise of terrorism. A genuinely objective analysis would reveal that contrary to popular belief linking religion to extremism; social factors contribute to the rise in radicalization. Without eradicating social inequality, peace in the world will remain elusive. Eradicating social inequality does not mean imposition of a socialist or communist order. The basic amenities or facilities should be made available to all without any discrimination.
