A useful service

This is with reference to the report “Online labor info service launched” (Jan. 19). It is a very good initiative with far-reaching consequences. Such a service was long overdue. It is help the expatriate work force to a great extent. At present, the expatriates are not fully aware of their rights and legal procedures due to which many people exploit their situation and sometimes fleece them. The government’s decision to launch an online service will help the expatriates clear their confusion regarding various labor laws.
It is heartening to note that the authorities are working day in and day out to streamline the labor market and resolve lingering issues.
Most of the government services in the Kingdom are now being offered online. In addition to streamlining the official procedures, this is the best way to fight corruption, which creeps in naturally due to human involvement. This phenomenon is not unique to Saudi Arabia. Corruption is present everywhere around the world in one form or the other. However, we should try to make all-out efforts to reach the target of making our respective societies free of all kinds of corruption.
In the case of Saudi Arabia, one has to admit that the authorities are working diligently to fight corruption. Now the onus lies on each and every citizen and resident of the country to help the government root out corrupt practices. We all can do that by refusing to cooperate with corrupt officials. The government should also introduce an online service to report corrupt practices in various government departments. This service will help serve as deterrence and people will think twice before violating any law of the land. — Sarwar Bukhari, Jeddah
