Members of Yemen’s two warring sides say peace talks in Switzerland have been indefinitely halted after the country’s Shia Houthi rebel delegation suspended all meetings with the internationally recognised government in a protest over ceasefire violations.
The officials said on Friday the Houthis declared they would not resume talks unless the UN condemned government breaches of the week-long truce. Houthi fighters have also ignored the ceasefire agreement.
Yemen’s clashes pit the Houthis and army units loyal to a former president against the government, which is backed by the Saudi-led coalition and supported by the US.
On the ground, security officials neutral in the conflict say fighters from both sides are refusing to respect the ceasefire. All officials spoke anonymously in line with regulations.
On Tuesday, the UN said peace talks aimed at clinching a permanent ceasefire and a political transition had started at an undisclosed location in Switzerland.
“The UN-sponsored consultations aimed at finding a durable solution to theYemen crisis started today in Switzerland. These consultations seek to establish a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire, secure improvements to the humanitarian situation and a return to a peaceful and orderly political transition,” according to a statement read out on Tuesday by UN spokesman Ahmad Fawzi and reported by Reuters.
