BAGHDAD: Iraq has opened an investigation into the cir cumstances that led to the de ath of 10 Iraqi soldiers in a coa lition air strike west of Bagh dad on Friday , Iraq's defence minister Khaled al-Obeidi sa id on Saturday.
A statement from the joint operations command on Friday mentioned that 10 had been "wounded or killed" but Obeidi and another senior military so urce clarified on Saturday that 10 troops were killed. Accor ding to the joint command, the incident occurred when Iraqi ground forces were advancing towards positions held by IS fighters south of Fallujah. An air strike struck during close combat, resulting in casualties to both, it said.
The US military acknowled ged a coalition strike may have caused casualties among the ranks of the Iraqi security for ces it supports in Fallujah and elsewhere in the country .
